I can remember all the fears people had when PC first came out. They feared that people will steal their money from banks. Remember that PCs came out in 1980 (Comodore Pet, Radio Shack TSR 80, and Apple II). Public access to the Internet was not until 1993. That was not the only thing they feared about these computers. The big fear was job loss. The only thing that is hurting getting a job is not technology, but whom we vote into our government.
When the Internet did come, came new fears. Now with public communications like IM, online chat rooms, MySpace, Twitter, etc., people are showing even more fears. There is a lot of fear going on with no evidence to prove that these things people fear are real. The Y2K junk never happened. Yes, there are crimes online, but that does not mean we should pack all the technologies and hind in a corner.
Twitter is a fast growing thing online. A number of companies are using it now. Millions upon millions of people are using twitter on a minute my minute basis. Twitter will not go away if we simply ignore it. Neither will any of our technologies. In five or so years, there will be something else new online. Global communication online is here to stay. It is growing faster then anything on Earth. It cannot be stopped or truly controlled. I am happy that there are TOS (Term of Service) on these online services.
For me, I see a great potential for employers to get to know future employees. The formal atmosphere in getting a job is super and all, but how much are job recruiters learning about the applicants? Sometimes too much order is a pain. Twitter is a means of letting others know who you really are without giving out giving too much information that can cause our identity to be stolen.
Being online is no different then walking the streets. For many, many years people have communicated face-to-face in public so all can see and hear, but their was no "identity stolen" issues as it is online. Why is this? Can someone still my identity by me giving my own name? Full names have been given in public numerous times. The issue with using the Internet is common sense.
The Internet is not for the meek or children. Parents would you send out your children onto the streets by themselves? When you allow them to use the Internet without you being with them, you are doing just that. The Internet is not a bad place. As with anything else, it is how you use it. There are a lot of porn sites online, but that is a very small fraction of all the great stuff that one can use online, including twitter.
The next question I am sure everyone has asked and will ask, why twitter in the first place? If that question is asked in a negative manner, then why do we email, IM (Instant Message), and other forms of communicate online? Twitter is a new form of communicating online. It surpasses all other form of online communications. Please watch this video and see for yourself.
If one thinks that twitter is another form of chat room or IM, then one needs to know more about twitter. It is much, much more then a simple communication device online. You can do things that you could not do in a chat room or IM. Since Twitter is new, it does not have all the features that it can have. Remember the first time you wrote a blog? It was so basic and plain. Now one can blog in so many different ways.
Right now with twitter, it is how you use it, or I should say what software you use to operate in twitter. The best software that I have found to date is twhril. It can do all sorts of things. Here is a super video on how to use twhril.
